Please Note. Out of consideration to other bathers, store employees, and shoppers, if you have been skunked in the past two months, please wash at home. This is very important and serious. If skunk odor is detected after your bath, you will be responsible for a $100 cleaning fee.

If your dog is skunked, here are some helpful instructions to help you through the ordeal at home.

  • DON'T PANIC! This isn't going to be pleasant, but it's also probably not going to be the end of the world either. Keep calm, your dog needs you.

  • Control the situation by removing your dog from the skunk's presence. Stay outside, you don't want to bring that smell into your house or car. Likewise, you may want to wear gloves and old clothes.

  • Assess your dog's situation. Odds are good he was sprayed in the face. Flush eyes, nose, and mouth with cool water, especially the eyes. Saline solution eyewash can also be used. Wipe the rest of the face gently with a towel.

  • Wipe your dog's body gently with a towel to remove as much skunk spray as possible. The spray is an oil and does not mix with water, rinsing your dog will not help much at this point. Check for any bite marks or scratches too. If your dog was bitten by the skunk, contact your local veterinarian immediately.

  • Time to wash your pet! You can use a commercial product like Nature's MiracleSynergy Labs, or another de-skunking shampoo. Alternatively, use a mixture of these household ingredients at home:
    • 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
    • ¼ cup of baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap

    • Mix these ingredients up in a container. It will start to fizz. The sooner you use it the more potent it will be.
    • This is an irritant so try to keep it out of your animal's face and eyes. Also, don't store this for later use, it will lose its effectiveness and could burst the container it is stored in.

  • Wash your dog very thoroughly. Be sure to scrub vigorously down through their coat to reach and break up all the oils. Leave the solution in for 10-20 minutes. Your dog's fur may lighten in color a bit due to the hydrogen peroxide.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water. Be sure to rinse off all the solution down to the skin.
  • Repeat this process if necessary. Skunk oil is tough to get out, persistence is key.
  • Finish with a regular wash with regular dog shampoo.
  • The Skunk smell may come back when your dog gets wet for a few months. Continued washing can help, but sometimes time is the necessary factor.
